My naturalistic approach to gardening has been influenced by my Japanese heritage. My immigrant parents were not gardeners, but they appreciated nature, leading us on hikes in the woods of Wisconsin and road trips to national parks. I recently retired after 30 years as a neurologist, during which the benefits to mind and body of the great outdoors, sunshine, and the satisfaction of growing a tomato or geranium were so evident and encouraged. Since joining the Gates Mills Garden Club in 2017, I have spent many hours getting my hands dirty, planting seeds with schoolchildren, and enjoying the living beauty we create together. We dig dirt and nurture plants, but I have found the greatest joy in being part of a group that digs and nurtures each other and the community. I am honored to serve as co-president of this club in 2025 and 2026
