Dear Friends,

It is an honor to lead this organization of brilliant and talented women and men. This year’s theme is "To Give and Grow”. Giving can be in many forms such as the gift of your time in the cottage gardens, helping with a committee, sharing a special talent or a making a financial gift. Growing can take place in the dirt, as well as in reaching out to the community at large, advancing our online experience, and archiving our club’s history.

The Garden Club will be growing in our efforts to involve youth.  During the month of August, eleven children participated in our youth educational event. The children, ages 3 years to 11 years, were taught about succulents and, then, they were given the opportunity to choose and plant personalized dish gardens.  Each child chose three different succulents and a brightly colored container in which to plant them.  Guided by members of the GMGC (Marilyn Pettegrew, Kelly Siemborski, Barbara Schuh, and Margaret Duff), the children had a ‘hands on’ experience in choosing pebbles, soil, and natural decorative items (e.g., stones, twigs) to enhance their dish gardens. The children will care for their succulent gardens at home until October 11th.  They will, then, enter their creations in the “Holiday Enchantment” Flower Show on October 12th and 13th for judging.  This was a fun, educational event enjoyed by the children, their parents/grandparents, and GMGC members!

Our magnificent Flower Show, Holiday Enchantment, was held October 12th and October 13th at Esquire's Cottage, 1280 Chagrin River Road in Gates Mills.  Holiday Enchantment was a wonderful success with many visitors. The Cottage and Barn were filled with beautiful floral designs and horticulture specimens. Thanks to Janet Kirschenbaum, her committee and numerous volunteers.

We have been enhancing our existing website and turning it into a creative and friendly tool.  The website is used by our members, communities and other garden clubs to share the talents of our membership.  The Website was a fabulous asset for the Garden Tour to share information with guests and allowed them to pay in advance with PayPal.  Please take a look at the "Happenings" tab to learn about our "Community Outreach" projects and the new "Out & About" section which features gardening related events around Cleveland.

Some of our projects in 2017 and 2018 are installing new plaques on specific trees on our property to memorialize our deceased members, creating displays for our national and state awards, and adding new plants and evergreen specimens to our cottage gardens.

We would also like to welcome our new members into the garden club: Nancy McGinty, Meghan Roddy, Sarah Scott, Patricia Serrano, Jane Thornburgh and Jill Wenham.  We are so excited for you to be actively involved in many of our projects!

As I look forward to the months ahead, I'm filled with excitement!  If you haven't been active in the recent past and would like to be active this year, even in a small way; please feel free to contact me.  I would love to hear from you.  Stop by the cottage and see the beauty!  It will take your breath away!

May you find joy in gardening,
Kelly

To Give and Grow...Feeding the Community

PLANT AMERICA: Give & Grow with GCO
GCO President, Deanna Sterns, theme for her administration is PLANT AMERICA: Give & Grow with GCO.  Going along with that theme, her President’s Project is an initiative with clubs to collect food for donation to local food pantries or soup kitchens in each region.  The ultimate goal is for each club to donate the weight of their club in food.  The Gates Mills Garden Club is participating in this outreach program to help feed the needy in Ohio.  We will be in competition with other garden clubs in Ohio to see who can contribute the most pounds of food to their community food pantry.  We will collect non-perishable food items such as canned vegetables, beans, low-sodium soups, peanut butter, canned tuna, pasta and brown rice, etc. at monthly meetings.  Please donate to this worthy cause to help those less fortunate.
