2025 in BLOOM

The May baskets are hanging from street signs, and busy season for the Gates Mills Garden Club, and indeed all gardeners, is afoot. Early May is the time to dig and divide your favorite plants for our much-anticipated Plant Sale and Vintage Boutique, which takes place on the morning of May 24. In addition to donating wonderful plants, please lend a hand on the mornings of May 20 and 21 as we set up and prepare the plants for sale. Many volunteers are also needed on the day of the sale to make sure the shopping experience proceeds as smoothly as possible.

Our sure to delight flower show, Sunday in the Park, is rapidly approaching. Our monthly program on May 13 will feature floral designer Jean Gilbert, who will discuss and demonstrate flower arrangements based on the design types specified in the flower show schedule. Then sign up to create a design, botanical craft or photograph for the June 27 and 28 show. And look around - surely you have something to contribute to the horticulture division of the show.

Fast on the heels of May is National Garden Week from June 1 through 7. The garden club has planned a special garden-related activity each day to raise community awareness of the benefits of gardening and the resources available at our garden club. Please invite friends and neighbors to our public events:

  • June 1 at noon: Mayor Steve Siemborski’s proclamation of National Garden Week at the Gates Mills Arboretum entrance.
  • June 4 from 5:30 to 7pm at the Barn: Program on combating invasive plants in the Gates Mills Arboretum (and your own yard) with Bryan Kuchta, CEO of the company Gates Mills hired to remove invasive plants. We will have samples of invasive plants to help you identify them, as well as samples of native plants that will be used to restore the Arboretum woodland. Free native plant gift! RSVP required at [email protected].
  • June 6 from 4:30 to 6:30pm at the garden club: Tour the gardens at the club with the members who helped shape them. RSVP required at [email protected].
  • June 7 at 10:30 am at the Gates Mills Library: Youth ages 12–18 will build their own mini terrarium in this hands-on workshop at the Gates Mills Library. Space is limited.
RSVP: Alicia Raffa, Youth Librarian, (440) 423-4808.

Please see the full National Garden Week schedule under Happenings for all the details.

Happy gardening!
